Homework

At Nightingale, we recognise that there are lots of ways families can support their children at home.  However, we are not a school that believe in sending home lots of photocopied sheets for homework.  We do not believe that this helps our children to learn and it can often be a source of conflict within the home.  This does not mean that we do not see the benefit of home learning.

Our minimum homework expectations are:

Years 1 and 2

Years 3 and 4

Years 5 and 6

At least 15 minutes each day

At least 30 minutes each day

At least 40 minutes each day.

Children should do the following every day:

- Read with an adult or, if able to, read independently

- Practice their number facts.  This could be their number bonds to 10 or 20.  It could also be their multiplication tables.

- Learn their spellings.  All children are given a list of spellings to learn each week.  This links in with what spelling pattern is being taught in the classroom.  They are given the spellings on a Monday and they are tested on a Friday.

Children in Nursery and Reception are not expected to complete any homework.  However, it is vital that parents support their children's developing literacy and numeracy skills by reading regularly, practice counting and by talking with their children regularly.
