School Governors

On this page you will find details and photographs of the members of the Governing Body of Nightingale Primary School and the committees (attached). You will see that they come from various backgrounds and have a variety of expertise to offer to the School.

One thing they all have in common is the wish to provide the best possible education for every pupil in the School. They are a group of dedicated individuals who give freely of their time and energy to work in partnership with the staff and parents to achieve this wish.

" ...We congratulate you on the high quality of governance shown by your governing body, which already looked good in the documentation and was confirmed by the assessment visit. In particular we were impressed with:

  • The close collaboration between the governors and the senior leadership team in school self-evaluation and strategic planning;
  • The close knowledge of the school on the part of governors, especially relating to the staffing structure, the quality of teaching, and pupil progress;
  • Work done by governors with the senior staff on the International Primary Curriculum;
  • Induction arrangements for new governors including their involvement in school visits;
  • The high level of trust between the governors and the Head Teacher.... " ,  Phil Hand, Governor Mark

Roy Coleman - Headteacher

I came to Greenwich to train to be a primary teacher back in 1993.  I first came to Nightingale Primary School in 1995 as a student teacher.  It was this experience that led me to want to work in this area.  I have now worked in the Royal Borough of Greenwich for nearly twenty years teaching in a range of schools.  Nightingale remains a very special school to me.  I love the vibrancy and the diversity of the community.  I am proud to be the headteacher and to work with fantastic staff, governors, parents and children.

Bob Love MBE - Chair of Governors

Bob Love

I feel passionately that Education is the second best gift, after love, that we can give our children. I received an excellent education myself and became actively involved in education provision when my eldest daughter started Nursery over 30 years ago. I decided to become a School Governor in order to make a contribution to the education system that had served me and my daughters so well.

During over 30 years I have served on the governing bodies of nine schools; six of these I chaired and on two I have been Vice Chair. I currently serve on seven governing bodies including Nightingale.

I joined the Nightingale Governing Body in the autumn of 2008 and have been Chair ever since.

For ten years I was an Ofsted Lay Inspector and took part in over 100 Inspections. I represent Primary Schools on the Schools Forum and currently chair this statutory body. I have served on the Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education (SACRE), as a Church of England representative, since its formation in 1990 when Greenwich first became an Education Authority.

Prior to my retirement, I worked as a Chartered Civil Engineer and was a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institute of Management and the British Computer Society.

Outside education my main interests are my family, including my five grandchildren, and Church related activities.

I have been designated a National Leader of Governance (NLG) and as such can be called upon to advise other Governing Bodies.

In June 2015, I was appointed by the Queen a Member of the Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to education.

Heather St. Clare - Co-opted Governor

Heather St. Clare

I have been a Governor at Nightingale School since October 2007.  Before this I was Headteacher at South Rise Primary in Plumstead. Prior to my retirement I had been working in Education for more than 40 years.

When I retired I decided to offer my services as a Governor because I have always enjoyed working with young people and believe that seeing them develop their learning and skills was a great privilege.  I am also a Governor at Plumstead Manor School.

At Nightingale I am the Chair of the Learning and Achievement Committee which supports the school staff in ensuring that pupils achieve to the very highest standards.  We hear directly from the staff about the work they are doing, the achievements of the pupils and offer support in any way we can.

All Governors are linked to a special area of interest and mine is the Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception).  I am also the named Governor for Special Educational Needs and Safeguarding. I try and visit the school as often as I can, especially for special events.

When I am not being a Governor I spend a lot of time with my delightful grandchildren, walking my dog and gardening.

 Amanda Rees - Co-opted Governor

Amanda ReesI have been a parent governor at Nightingale Primary School since June 2010.  I welcomed this exciting opportunity to become more involved in the school and to watch the children progress and develop through learning in a safe and stimulating environment. I am a member of the Learning and Achievement Committee, which works with school staff by supporting them in their work towards helping children achieve their best.

All governors are linked to year groups. My links are with Years 3 and 4. I also come into school from time to time and help with activities, story-time and school outings.

I have young children who both attend Nightingale.

I love to work with young people and am thrilled to be able to be involved in this crucial and fundamental stage of childhood, where skills and opportunities are gleaned and possibilities are endless.

I have previously taught art and music to children of all ages, and am passionate about languages and the arts.

From a valiant heart, nothing is impossible!

 Ayinde Julius Bamiro - Parent Governor

Ayinde Julius Bamiro

This is my first governorship appointment in United Kingdom. However I was an Executive member Parent-Teacher Association of my College until my relocation to United Kingdom in 2007.

I decided to join the governors to help provide useful advice on how best to improve childrens' educational standards and most importantly to give back to my community on any given assignment in my area of specialisation, that is, accounting profession. As an accountant I will like to bring my expertise to help in the area of taxation, budgeting and business related activities which hitherto the school might have been paying for such services in the past.

I am a trained teacher and teach children at Sunday Schools in my church and am available to help in this area.

My relocation to United Kingdom has helped me to have in-depth knowledge of event planning and security because I have acquired skill over four years in this field.

Danielle Crawley - Co-opted Governor

I have lived in the Woolwich area since I was born and attended local primary and secondary schools in The Royal Borough of Greenwich.  I first came to Nightingale as a volunteer and was successful in becoming part of the administration team in 2006.  There is something very special about Nightingale and the community.  I was so impressed with how standards have improved since 2006 that I wanted to contribute to this in a capacity other than as an employee.  Becoming a governor enables me to have a greater understanding of the intricacies of school and helps me influences decisions that will benefit the children, including my daughter who I moved to Nightingale in 2014.  Since she started in year 2, my husband and I saw a massive jump in her progress.  I am proud to not only have my daughter attend the school but to also work with such a dynamic community and school.

Nick Gammons - Parent Governor

I have always been passionate about education. It is crucial to the development of children and society. A good education gives someone the best chance to do what they want with their life - opening up so many possibilities. I was lucky to have inspirational teachers at the schools I attended, who gave me a passion to learn.

Once my eldest son started at Nightingale I wanted to help the school in any way I could. Being a parent governor seemed like the ideal opportunity to really get involved.

I have been a governor for nearly a year now and I have visited the school as often as I could in that time. I offer my enthusiasm and energy to the role and I hope that the governing body can continue to help make Nightingale the best school it can possibly be.

I was into computers at an early age and I have continued to enjoy using them in my professional career as an IT consultant. I am delighted to see the great use of technology at Nightingale and I have brought my skills and knowledge in this area to my role as a governor.

I look forward to continuing to serve Nightingale in the future and helping to make it as bright as possible.

Angela Hancock - Co-opted Governor

Angela HancockI have been a Governor at Nightingale School since September 2010.

I am currently a Schools Cluster Manager working with 9 local Primary schools, Plumstead Manor Secondary school and local Children’s Centres.

Before this I was a Physical Education and History teacher working firstly in Tower Hamlets and then in Greenwich.

I was asked to become a Community Governor at Nightingale as I had good knowledge of the local community having taught in the area since 1980. I was pleased to accept and have the opportunity to contribute to supporting the school and the children.

As a Governor I attend different meetings and events in school and as someone who has worked in secondary education it is good to be involved at the Primary level and see younger children developing their learning. I have particularly enjoyed sitting in class with Year 1 and Year 2 and seeing the engagement of the children.

My interests outside of my work are playing hockey for Blackheath Hockey Club and visiting historic buildings.
