ARC (Advanced Reading Club)

ARC is our Advanced Reading Club for more able children in year 5 and 6.  These children are invited to attend an after school reading group where they will read and discuss more challenging texts.  We select these children by asking them to complete a baseline assessment and identifying their reading age; if their reading age is significantly above their chronological age then they are eligible for selection.

The purpose of the group is to develop a greater depth of understanding of different texts and to encourage the children to read widely and to challenge themselves.

The first book we are going to read as a group is 'Northern Lights' by Philip Pullman.  This is the author's first book in what is known as 'His Dark Materials'.

'12-year-old Lyra Belacqua runs wild with her dæmon Pantalaimon around Jordan College, Oxford, under the guardianship of the college's master. One day, she witnesses the Master poison wine intended for Lord Asriel, Lyra's rebellious and adventuring uncle. She warns Asriel, then spies on his lecture about "dust", mysterious elementary particles attracted to adults more than children, and images of a parallel universe that can be seen through the northern lights. The Oxford scholars agree to fund his research, considered heretical by the oppressive Church.'

Northern Lights is an exciting adventure story that crosses land, sea and air.  The main character, Lyra, will meet pirates, witches and the exiled king of the polar bears.
